Award-winning journalist Leon Harris anchors the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts for ABC7/WJLA-TV and co-hosts Capital Sunday. He came to Washington by way of Atlanta and CNN, where he was the anchor of CNN Live Today, CNN Presents, Early Edition, Prime News, The World Today and American Stories.

Harris has covered such major breaking news stories as the September 11th terror strike, the Oklahoma City bombing, the search for John F. Kennedy, Junior’s plane off Martha’s Vineyard, the 1993 siege of the Russian Parliament building and the Los Angeles Riots in 1991. Harris also covered the 2000 presidential race, interviewed presidential candidates, and reported live from the floor of the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia.

Harris has received numerous awards including two NationalCableAce awards for Best Newscaster, Emmy Awards for coverage of the September 11th terror strike, the Oklahoma City bombing and the 2000 presidential race. He was honored, too, with a National Headliner Award, a gold medal from the New York Film Festival, and Washington National Capital Area Local Emmy for Best newscaster.

Harris graduated Cum Laude from Ohio University with a degree in Communications. He is passionate about improving the lives of children and serves on numerous charitable boards including those of World of Children and For Love of Children. He is a member of the Foundation Board at Ohio University and serves as and advisor for that school’s College of Communications.
