Alan Meltzer is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Meltzer Group, a Bethesda, Maryland based group of insurance and financial services firms that has long been associated with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Mr. Meltzer founded the firm in 1982 and has been named MassMutual’s Agent of the Year an unprecedented 17 times in his career. His organizational goal: “Understand client expectations; provide ‘Raving Fan’ service to exceed them.”
Known by several names over the years, The Meltzer Group is today comprised of five divisions: Meltzer Carroll Life ( a provider of individual life insurance, estate planning and corporate insurance policies), Meltzer Group Benefits (a full-service employee benefits broker and consulting firm), Meltzer Karlin Property & Casualty (a provider of individual and business property and casualty insurance), Meltzer Private Client Services (a financial planning and asset management group), and Meltzer Retirement Plan Services (a retirement plan consulting firm for local and national businesses.) The Meltzer Group’s clients include many Fortune 500 firms and leading businessmen and athletes.
Alan has spoken nationally to numerous insurance, legal and accounting professional organizations on the uses of life insurance in both estate planning and non-qualified deferred compensation programs. He has been named to the Million Dollar Round Table every year since 1978 and Top of the Table every year since 1980, an annual accomplishment that places him in the top 1% of agents nationwide. In 1996, he received from his high school alma mater the Needham High School Distinguished Career Award, and in 2006, Mr. Meltzer received the National Wrestling Coaches Association Meritorious Service Award. He also received the Cyrus Ansary Medal in 2006 from American University.
A native of Boston, Mr. Meltzer moved to Washington in 1969 to attend American University where he was captain of the wrestling team for three years and a member of Alpha Tau Omega. Alan still lends much support today to the athletics programs and the Kogod School of Business at AU. He is a member of the Kogod Dean’s Advisory Council, the President’s Circle Council, and the Eagles Club.
In addition to his activities on behalf of American University, Mr. Meltzer is one of the top corporate philanthropists of the Washington, D.C. area as cited by the Washington Business Journal. He has served on the Board of Directors of several organizations including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Wolf Trap Foundation, For Love of Children, United Jewish Endowment Fund, Junior Achievement and the Washington Hospital Center Foundation.
The Meltzer’s have made gifts to AU through the Meltzer Family Philanthropic Fund, a donor-advised fund at the United Jewish Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. In addition, Alan and Amy Meltzer are the sole trustees of the Alan and Amy Meltzer Family Foundation, Inc.
Alan lives in Bethesda with his wife, Amy. The couple has four children, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Max and Mark. Alan awakens each day driven to work harder and accomplish more than he did the day before. This combined vision, commitment and stamina enables him to accomplish far greater objectives for his clients, his charities and his family than the sum of the parts would allow.
