Recent events have brought much-needed attention to the importance of
financial literacy education for youth. This has
been an integral part of Junior Achievement's mission for 89 years.
Locally, we are piloting a facility-based,
experiential learning program with middle school students called FINANCE PARK.
The curriculum, already available in 14 cities throughout the country, is a
reality-based, hands-on simulation that helps students build a foundation for intelligent personal
financial decision-making. Students visit FINANCE PARK (a mobile unit facility
presently sponsored by Capital One) after completing five weeks of curriculum
instruction in the classroom. Students then spend the day in FINANCE PARK making
financial decisions and constructing a personal budget for housing,
food, savings, transportation, entertainment, healthcare, utilities, clothing,
education, and charitable giving.
By late 2009, we have plans to open a permanent FINANCE PARK facility in
Greater Washington to deliver the financial literary education so important to the
future success of our young people.
JA is always open to suggestions - we'd like to hear yours!

Groundhog Sees Shadow at the White House
Junior Achievement Groundhog Job Shadow Day participants will check in at nearly 45 federal
agencies this week. Our Federal Goverment CIO's IT departments will host 475
students from 36 schools. But it won't stop there! Meteorologists at NBC4, ABC7,
and WUSA9 will host JA students live on their weather forecasts, and WMAL radio will
host JA students in the newsroom. And let's not forget the White House - yet again a lucky Junior
Achiever will get the opportunity to shadow the single most important job in our
country! For more information, contact Nomoya Tinch, District Manager, Washington, D.C., at

Calling all JA Volunteers!
Spring is JA's busiest time in classrooms and we need
additional volunteers to reach the maximum number of students. You can make a
difference and reap the rewards as noted in the comments below.
Passionate Words from a Volunteer:
"Teaching the third grade and seeing the students working in groups, I see future managers,
CEOs and quiet negotiators in the making. Above all I see intelligence and enthusiasm.
I really enjoy seeing the future in the eyes of children!"
