VA State Board of Education Mandates Financial Literacy to Graduate

Last month the Virginia State Board of Education mandated – as a graduation requirement – that high school students complete a one credit course in financial literacy. This bold move was in response to VA Senate Bill 950 requiring school systems to incorporate financial education in their middle and high school curriculum. The trend is continuing in both the District of Columbia and Maryland. Click here to learn more.

Seventy percent of young workers believe employers should use volunteerism as a professional development tool, according to a recent Junior Achievement study. JA Bowl Rocks

Channel 7 news Anchor and Honorary Chair Leon Harris kicked off the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon on March 28 to raise awareness and funding for financial literacy. Thanks to the lead sponsorship of KPMG, JA will raise over $350,000 to help JA serve 44,000 area students this year. Fairfax JA Students Win Virginia State Stock Market Game

A team of Lake Braddock Secondary School students – enrolled in Junior Achievement – beat out 800 other Virginia state high school teams to win the Stock Market Game. Efforts were led by students Eric Taylor and Joe Conte. Their advisor and teacher Jim Novak and JA volunteer Kurt Langenwalter of First Command Financial Planning co-taught the JA Economics curriculum to help prepare the students for The Stock Market Game.
