In a quiet moment, as I flipped the calendar to 2012, the thought crossed my mind, “what if?”
What if every young person truly knew how to grab life’s rudder and steer to their fullest potential?
What if they had mentors to help them navigate along the way? With a map of how the real world operates?
And so our New Year’s Resolution is simple: To turn these “what ifs” into reality for the youth of Greater Washington.
Empowering young people to own their success is our mission. Inspiring them to get there is our passion.
Happy New Year.

New Deloitte College and Career Center Opens at Finance Park
This month Finance Park’s College and Career Center opened thanks to the sponsorship from Deloitte. Students visit after completing their family budgeting simulation, and learn about jobs in different career clusters – such as architecture, health sciences, business management, or agriculture – and the educational degrees necessary for each of them.
Students also learn how local colleges can help prepare them for those jobs – clearly connecting their education with future success in the workforce.

Increased Holiday Spending Leads to Frugal New Year’s Resolutions
Though holiday spending in November and December grew over recent years, a new survey measuring financial goals found that people are paying more attention to their wallets in 2012. The survey found that the top three resolutions were to save more, spend less, and pay off debt.
JA provides youth with the tools necessary to instill responsible spending and saving habits and to become a fiscally responsible consumer. To help young people in your community learn these valuable life skills, please visit www.myJA.org/volunteers/.
