John P. McDaniel is Chief Executive Officer of MedStar Health, Inc., a multi-institutional, not-for-profit health care organization serving Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region. MedStar is an integrated system of 25 hospitals and healthcare businesses including Franklin Square Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Harbor Hospital, and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore; National Rehabilitation Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington; VNA of MedStar Health, MedStar Research Institute and others.

Under McDaniel’s leadership, MedStar has become one of the Baltimore-Washington region’s most extensive networks of healthcare providers and facilities, offering services for emergency, acute and critical care; ambulatory surgery; physical rehabilitation and home and long-term care, including centers of excellence in cardiology, cardiac surgery, oncology and women’s services. MedStar is the third largest employer in the region with 22,000 employees and 4,000 affiliated physicians, serving more than half-a-million patients each year.

McDaniel’s tenure began at Medlantic Healthcare Group’s inception in 1982 when he became CEO of the Washington Hospital Center. From that base, he formed the Medlantic Healthcare Group which became, in cooperation with other institutions, one of the region’s most comprehensive health care delivery systems. With the recent merger of Medlantic and Helix Health of Baltimore, McDaniel became the chief executive officer of the new Helix-Medlantic organization, MedStar Health, the largest healthcare system in the mid-Atlantic region.

During his career in the industry, McDaniel has held a number of executive positions including serving as president and chief executive officer of Washington Hospital Center Corporation; president of Maryland Health Care System, Inc.; and president of Lutheran Hospital of Maryland, Inc. He has also held various administrative posts at Maryland General Hospital (Baltimore, Maryland), Community Hospital (Springfield, Ohio) and the Wilmington Medical Center (Wilmington, Delaware).

McDaniel, a past chairman and currently a member of the executive committee of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, is also a member of the executive committee of the Federal City Council, a trustee of the National Capitol Area Foundation and a member of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. He is a member of the board of directors of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Georgetown University, LifeLinkMD, Washington Real Estate Investment Trust and the Greater Baltimore Committee. He is past chairman and currently a member of the Maryland State Racing Commission, is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and has been a delegate to the America Hospital Association House of Delegates.

An advocate for humanism in health care, McDaniel has published articles and lectured on health care management issues. He has served as a preceptor for the George Washington University, Duke University and University of Michigan graduate programs in hospital administration and has been a member of the visiting faculty of Duke University’s graduate program in hospital administration. McDaniel holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Wittenberg University, a M.H.A. from the University of Michigan and an honorary doctorate from Wittenberg University. He is the recipient of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s Globe and Anchor Award and the Greater Washington Board of Trade’s Leader of the Years Award.
