Junior Achievement (JA) has launched Biz Kid$, a new initiative about entrepreneurship
and financial literacy aimed at school-aged children. This multi-media initiative
consists of a public TV series, companion classroom curricula, a website and online
newsletter. The website, www.BizKids.com,
features clips from the TV series and invites visitors to sign up for the initiative's
monthly newsletter, The Vault, which offers ideas on how kids can start their
own businesses, hints on earning money, and tips on making their money grow.
At a time when only 10 percent of youth in America are graduating from high school
with any kind of instruction in personal finance, Biz Kid$ helps kids understand the
importance of saving and starting good financial habits early on. In fact, of the many
young people who now drop out of college, more than half leave because of bankruptcy —
not bad grades. To help reverse this trend, Biz Kid$ is designed to educate young people
about finances and entrepreneurship. The initiative teaches the basics of saving money,
budgeting, investing and giving back to the community.
Junior Achievement created the classroom curricula for the initiative which reinforces
the content of each television episode and supplements existing JA programs. The
show is produced by the creators of the Emmy award-winning TV series "Bill Nye the
Science Guy," and airs locally on public television station
WHUT 32 at 6:00 p.m. on Mondays.
WETA 26 will begin airing Biz Kid$
shortly.
