Volunteer Appreciation Week Spotlight: Sandra Fletcher

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week!

April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week, and there is no better time to pause and recognize the selfless contributions of our extraordinary JA Volunteers who inspire and motivate us every day.

Throughout the week, we’ll be featuring JA Volunteers who go above and beyond to connect students with the learning experiences they need for an inspired and successful future.

JA: How have you volunteered with JA and what compelled you to do so?

Sandra: I have volunteered my time, knowledge and talents with JA having a background in the finance environment. I have always thought if I shared my experience and knowledge with JA students that I could convey to the students how important finance is to a person’s daily life.

The first time I volunteered was when I was on the Board of Directors for a financial literacy group, since then I continued to volunteer to champion the JA mission that gives a student a day to make adult decisions dealing with life financial scenarios and working with the students because they are very inquisitive about finance.

JA: What is the biggest personal benefit you receive as a JA volunteer?

Sandra: The biggest personal benefit I get from being a JA volunteer is knowing that I have helped the students have a greater appreciation of knowing the importance of finance in their parents’ daily lives.

JA: What is your favorite JA memory?

Sandra: I have a few, but my favorite is when the day is almost complete and the question is asked, “Do you want kids,” and the responses are, “No, they are too expensive.” How ironic!

JA: What do you wish more people knew about JA or what would you tell someone that is thinking about volunteering with JA?

Sandra: This is a fantastic program that gives students exposure to the importance of managing finances.

JA: What advice would you give to the next generation?

Sandra: To always give back your time and talent because someone did it for you, and you can make a difference.
